Mountain biking in Ladakh is not something new as far as riders are concerned, there have been plenty of prominent riders who have visited the region in the past. The high, dry mountains are perfectly placed form some epic freeride lines and also, there are plenty of natural singletrack trails that run throughout the region.
Given the impeccable landscape for mountain biking to thrive on, we lack the infrastructure to build a strong culture here. We see places like Pune, Nepal and Himachal where there is a growing culture and community. We couldn’t help but wonder why not here in Ladakh.
We are three friends, who run a MTB based travel company called Unexplored Ladakh and our primary Idea was to diversify the tourism Industry, which is sadly swamping into a rather saturated one.
The primary focus of this sport for us, started of as a commercial practice that soon transformed into something bigger. We took it upon ourselves to promote the sport in the region and came to a point where we were confident enough to reach out to the rightful authorities for any aid possible.
Our cries feel short until a top official from the tourism department stumbled upon our edit on YouTube that essentially paved way for us host the very first Mountain biking festival in Ladakh.
The MTB festival is finally happening on the 14th and 15th of September in Leh, near the famous Shanti Stupa.
The location of the festival was jewel of a find. The place notorious for people driving up just have a good time, hence the name was loosely coined as Disko valley by the locals.
We were aware of this place, for we too had participated in fair share of parties there, but never really gave any thought about it being a good place for a bike park.
So, one fine day when we were exploring places to ride our bikes on, we somehow made our way to DISKO valley and could immediately see the potential that this place held.
The most part of the festival would be held here. The site is just 3 to 4km away format the main town easily accessible on foot and on any vehicle.
The festival is mostly based on promoting the sport to the local mass and get them interested in it.
The activities that would revolve around this two day event is an introductory form of competitions and workshops.
The first day of the festival would host few workshops on mountain biking and the technical aspect of the sport.
The mountain biking workshop would be taken up by Vinay Menon, who would give an elaborate presentation on the sport in general. This is to help the locals get an idea of what mountain biking is all about.
The Next workshop would be based around the technical aspects of a mountain bike. This is to help them gain knowledge on how to maintain and repair ones bike on a trail or any where.
After lunch the park will be open for the riders to freely ride around and test their skills on different features that are spread around it. This time frame would be dedicated on teaching the young and new riders certain techniques that would be require while on a bike and also participants to practice on the pump track, which would be the next activity. The pump track is specifically designed for the competition, where one lap would be timed and decided accordingly.
15th of September is when the DH competition would take place on a different location with good gradient placed on a distance of 1 to 2 km.
So, come by on the 14th and 15th September to participate on one of the highest race’s you would ever do. Right here in Ladakh.
